Flooded streets in Castellon and Orihuela as red rain warning holds until midday « Euro Weekly News

The first confirmed flooding from this storm round came overnight, with firefighters pumping water from streets, homes and garages on the Castellon coast and in Tortosa, as well as further south in Orihuela. A red warning for torrential rain remains in force until midday along the northern coast of Valencia region.

In Tortosa, a storm settled over the city at around 10.30pm on Thursday. Between 10pm and 11pm, firefighters received around 20 calls about flooding across Baix Ebre, most of them in Tortosa. Streets were under water in the city centre and Santa Barbara, while several main roads were cut around midnight.

The Ebro river authority warned of sudden rises in the barrancos feeding the river in the area, including Galera, Pelos, Foies, Pixadors and Rocacorba, after more than 100mm of rain fell since Thursday night. Around 4,300 customers in Baix Ebre lost power. Civil Protection said there had been no serious incidents at that point.

Emergency services kept busy all night

On the Castellon coast, firefighters were also pumping water from homes in Oropesa and Santa Magdalena de Polpis after midnight. Santa Magdalena de Polpis recorded around 90 litres per square metre in less than an hour.

AEMET Comunitat Valenciana, the regional meteorological service, said the greatest risk was of local flooding along the northern Castellon coast, where storms were barely moving inland.

Valencia province saw fewer incidents overnight. By midnight, the 112 emergency service had recorded 27 rain-related incidents across Valencia and Castellon provinces, mainly involving water being pumped from streets, garages and ground floors.

The DGT reported the V-31R road at Silla was closed because of rain, while the AB-302 at Montealegre in Albacete was also affected. At around 4.20am, the regional emergency centre raised the flood plan to emergency situation 0 in both Castellon and Valencia.

Where the rain is due today

AEMET‘s latest map keeps red warnings in place until midnight along the southern Tarragona coast and pre-coast and the Castellon coast. The warning threshold is 90mm in one hour or 250mm in 12 hours.

After midday, rainfall intensity on the Castellon coast is expected to ease and shift towards the shoreline, although strong showers remain possible this afternoon.

Orange warnings cover inland Castellon until midday, the northern Alicante coast until around 8pm, Murcia and southeast Andalucia, plus Ibiza and Formentera throughout the day. Mallorca is under a yellow warning for heavy rain.

This afternoon, rain is expected to spread further. Showers and storms, with hail possible, are forecast across much of the country, with very strong storms possible in southeast Spain and the Balearic Islands.

Rain is also expected to reach the southern coast this afternoon, extending as far west as Malaga.

Saturday’s forecast map shows the red warnings disappearing, but rain clods covering most of Spain. Orange warnings also clear from the mainland, although yellow alerts remain in several areas and Ibiza stays under orange.
