Driver who rammed Gwinnett police car arrested, police say

Two Gwinnett County police officers escaped injury Tuesday after a driver rammed their patrol vehicle, prompting an officer to fire at the suspect’s vehicle in Snellville.

What we know:

The officers were driving through the intersection of Rockbridge Road and Stone Drive when an older-model, beige Kia Sorento struck their patrol vehicle, according to investigators. The SUV continued pushing the patrol car until it stopped on the median against a curb, leaving the police vehicle disabled.

As the Kia drove north on Rockbridge Road, one officer got out of the patrol car and tried to stop the driver. Police said the SUV nearly ran over the officer, who then opened fire.

No officers were hit by gunfire, and neither was injured. Police have not said whether any bullets struck the driver or the SUV, or whether anyone else was inside the Kia. Investigators also have not determined the driver’s motive or whether the initial collision was intentional.

Police used Flock safety cameras to identify the vehicle and its license plate. Detectives later located the Kia and took the driver into custody. Investigators were interviewing the suspect, and police said there was no widespread danger to the public.
