Jude Brothers release show at White Water Tavern on Thursday
JUDE BROTHERS
THURSDAY 10/8. White Water Tavern. 8 p.m. $12.
As if recently arrived through a portal from some more pastoral world than our own, Jude Brothers makes music that sounds like how a golden-hour walk through the woods feels. Accompanied by harp and guitar — or sometimes accompanied by nothing at all — the Fayetteville folk singer uses their rich voice to conjure a lush universe populated by fairies, dogwood trees and doomed lovers. While the harp, bucolic imagery and knack for knotty wordplay all make Joanna Newsom an apt comparison, Brothers is a singular talent who further cements their place in the national folk scene with each successive album. On Oct. 8 at the White Water Tavern, Brothers will celebrate the September release of the newest entry into their discography, “Dogwood Maiden Voyage,” a stunner that breathtakingly expands Brothers’ sound by adding strings and vocal harmonies to their normally sparse arrangements. The White Water is already a place that often feels carved out from ordinary day-to-day existence, but a full-band Jude Brothers show, with fellow harpist Stephanie Smittle serving as opener, makes for an especially otherworldly experience not to be missed.
