A Year After Osaka Expo, a Peaceful Forest Remains
OSAKA –
Nearly one year after the Osaka-Kansai Expo closed, the former exhibition grounds were opened to the media on October 2, revealing that around 90% of the pavilions and other facilities have been demolished, while the Forest of Tranquility remains a peaceful green space at the center of the site.
The Expo, which closed on October 13, 2025, is approaching the first anniversary of its conclusion as demolition and restoration work continues across the grounds in preparation for returning the land.
From the top of the Grand Ring, the massive wooden structure that became one of the Expo’s most recognizable landmarks, extensive construction work could be seen taking place below.
Although demolition of some pavilions is still underway, approximately 90% of the facilities have already been dismantled, marking a major step toward clearing the former exhibition site.
Meanwhile, the Forest of Tranquility, a nature-filled area that served as a popular resting spot for visitors during the six-month event, was opened to the media for the first time since the Expo closed.
Despite the surrounding construction activity, the forest has retained its peaceful atmosphere, with trees continuing to grow and greenery creating a refreshing environment that feels far removed from the demolition work taking place nearby.
The landscaped woodland, originally created as an artificial forest in the center of the Expo grounds, has developed into a lush green space that appears increasingly natural.
The contrast between the ongoing demolition work and the quiet surroundings of the forest highlights the transformation of the former Expo site as preparations move forward for its next stage of development.
According to plans for the site, the Forest of Tranquility will be preserved along with a section of the Grand Ring, allowing two of the Expo’s distinctive features to remain after the other facilities have been removed.
