Utility employee killed in hit-and-run; suspected driver arrested
A utility employee was killed in a hit-and-run in Bessemer, Alabama, and deputies say the driver is now in custody.
Around 8:17 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 5000 block of Main Street in Brighton after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, 63-year-old Romella Tabb was servicing a water meter when he was struck by a vehicle. Tabb died at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver fled the scene of the crash. Deputies tracked the suspect vehicle to the 2000 block of Belton Avenue, where 48-year-old Daniel Nava was taken into custody.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department
Nava has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

On Tuesday, Bessemer Utilities announced that its office would be closed as the team takes time to mourn the loss of their colleague.
Bessemer Mayor Louise Alexander released the following statement:
“During this difficult time, we stand beside our city employees and all who are grieving. Our utility workers are a valued part of our Bessemer family, and their loss and sorrow are felt throughout our community.
“We ask residents to join us in keeping everyone affected in prayer and to offer patience, compassion, and respect for their privacy as they mourn.
“May God bring comfort to grieving hearts, strength for the days ahead, and peace to all touched by this loss.”
