Today is the deadline for voter registration, so you’d better check to make sure you’re all set

Arkansans who want to weigh in on the Nov. 3 elections have to get their paperwork turned in today.

And because states routinely clean and prune their voter rolls, even experienced voters should get shaking right this second to make sure they remain in good standing and are all clear to cast their ballots.

It’s easy to check. Go here and enter your name and birthdate. If you’re not on there, get moving! You only have until the end of the day.

The Arkansas Secretary of State’s office has a pretty solid step-by-step explainer on getting registered.

You can do that today at your county clerk’s office. You can also print out a voter registration form here and get it in the mail in time to carry today’s postmark. Probably safer to deliver it in person, considering the tight deadline.

There’s one claim on the Arkansas Secretary of State website, though, we classify as debatable: “You must fill out a paper Voter Registration Application.”

That’s not exactly 100% true.

Should the voter advocacy group Get Loud Arkansas continue its winning streak in an ongoing court battle, Arkansas might soon join 43 other states, plus Washington, D.C., in permanently allowing voters to handle voter registration fully online, no “wet signatures” required.

The lawsuit challenges Arkansas’s requirement that future voters put actual pen to actual paper on the signature line, since digital signatures are legally acceptable pretty much everywhere else.

In the meantime, even as state state of Arkansas continues its legal efforts to thwart online voter registration, the courts have said basically that online voter registration is sorta, kinda allowed for the time being under the hybrid system Get Loud Arkansas offers, which lets registrants to fill out and sign the required form online. Get Loud takes it from there, printing out the physical forms and delivering the documents to county clerks.

Get Loud Arkansas is providing this service today, but only until 2:30 p.m. so they have time to get documents where they need to go by close of business.

Here’s how Get Loud Arkansas explains it:

Currently, forty-three states and Washington D.C., offer online voter registration. Arkansas is not one of them. To make the registration process easier, Get Loud Arkansas, a nonpartisan civic engagement organization, developed this online tool the “GLA Easy Application” that populates responses to the Arkansas Secretary of State’s paper voter registration form. Once submitted, we print and deliver the form to the appropriate election officials for you.

Please note: This is not an online voter registration portal. You are not registered to vote until the voter registration application has been accepted by your county clerk. Upon acceptance, you will receive a card in the mail confirming your voter registration status.

NOTICE: Due to the October 5 voter registration deadline and the time required to print and deliver paper registration forms to the appropriate election officials, this online voter registration application will temporarily close at 2:30 PM CT on Monday, October 5 and reopen on Tuesday, October 6 at 8:00 AM CT.
