Man, 41, and boy, 16, arrested after car damaged by gunshots in Morriston
Two people have been arrested after armed police responded to an incident in which a car was hit by gunshots.
South Wales Police said a vehicle on the A48 in Morriston, Swansea, sustained damage “consistent with a firearms discharge” on Friday and one person has sustained minor injuries.
A 41-year-old man from Llansamlet, Swansea, arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and a 16-year-old boy, also from Llansamlet, arrested on suspicion of affray, remain in custody.
The force said officers were still investigating and that it had been declared a critical incident.
South Wales Police said it was not currently aware of any major injuries or fatalities sustained in connection with the incident.
Residents were told to avoid the area and events, including a local firework display due to take place on Friday, were cancelled.
Video circulating online shows police officers next to a stationary car that appears to have been struck by a shotgun blast on Clase Road near an Asda superstore.
A National Police Air Service helicopter was circling the area but has since returned to base.
South Wales Police said all road closures put in place following the incident have now been lifted.
Ch Supt Stephen Jones said: “We thank the public wholeheartedly for their understanding and support during an incident which will have caused great concern to the people of Morriston, Llansamlet and wider Swansea.
“This investigation remains ongoing and a policing presence will continue in the area as officers work to reassure the local community.”
The local football club, Morriston Town AFC, cancelled a planned firework display on Friday.
“Unfortunately, the police have advised due to an issue ongoing, the event has to be cancelled. With immediate effect,” it said in a social media post on Friday, advising people to stay at home.
Gwyn Williams, a Plaid Cymru MS for Gŵyr Abertawe, said it was “a frightening thing for people in Swansea who are not used to this sort of news” but police had arrested two people in connection with this incident and there was no ongoing risk to the public.
