UCF made several key plays to challenge the Cougars. Tackett Curtis intercepted a pass late in the second quarter, and Keyone Jenkins later connected with Landen Chambers for a 6-yard touchdown that gave the Knights a 17-14 halftime lead. Jenkins scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter to put UCF ahead 24-21.
In the second overtime, UCF scored a touchdown and nailed a 2-point conversion to put the Knights up 39-31, securing the win.
The win marked the first time the Knights defeated an AP-ranked opponent at home. BYU was also the highest-ranked team UCF had hosted in program history.
“There’s a lot of teams in football with their quarterbacks hurt and their backups aren’t doing great,” UCF coach Scott Frost said. “Our backup is not a backup. He had an unbelievable game tonight.”
