UK weather: Amber warnings kick in as Storm Boelo to bring 80mph wind gusts

The National Grid said on Saturday that more than 124,000 properties had been restored with power supplies since the beginning of the storm. However, hundreds were still without power on Saturday evening.

In north-west England, more than 2,000 properties were without power on Saturday night due to the storm.

Strong winds could cause power cuts, flying debris, damage to buildings and trees, travel disruption and danger to life from large waves, the Met Office said.

The strongest winds affected western Scotland first, and are expected to spread eastwards overnight and through Sunday.

By Saturday evening, wind gusts of 75mph had been reached at South Uist Range, Western Isles, Highland and Eilean Siar, Scotland, on Saturday, according to the Met Office.

Train and ferry services have been cancelled in Scotland and police have warned against unnecessary road journeys. Dozens of flood warnings and alerts were in place across the country and flooding also closed a number of roads, including the A78 Inverkip Road in Greenock; the A77 at Lendalfoot in Ayrshire; and several in Dumfries and Galloway.
