LSR students say harassment routine long before Aastha Kunj gangrape

On September 21, three men posing as police personnel gang-raped a 17-year-old minor in South Delhi’s Aastha Kunj Park. Delhi Police arrested the accused after an encounter roughly 50 metres from Lady Shri Ram College’s (LSR) back gate, and they have since been remanded to judicial custody.

In the incident’s aftermath, LSR students spoke to Newslaundry about the lack of safety around the college and the harassment they routinely face. They described regularly encountering obscene acts and lewd remarks outside the college gates, with one student recounting that men often masturbate while staring at them.

Instead of addressing their safety concerns, LSR suspended in-person classes for two days and shifted to online mode, while the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) issued fresh guidelines on entry into parks after sunset. 

When we inspected Aastha Kunj Park and the stretch near LSR’s back gate one evening, we found stretches of darkness, malfunctioning street lights and the safety concerns that come with them.
