The figure that should worry policymakers most is 27: attacks on schools in the first half of 2026. Extortion of students, teachers and parents has turned education into a revenue line for the gangs, and classes in the affected districts keep emptying.

Why It Matters Beyond the Four Countries

All four crises export people. Cuban, Haitian, Colombian and Ecuadorian migration flows meet at the same borders and the same routes north, and each deterioration adds pressure to neighbours already managing their own emergencies. The UN’s ask is unchanged and unmet: funding for the regional response plans runs far behind the needs its own reports document.
