The Best Art Galleries in Bangkok
- 939 Rama I Rd, Wang Mai, Pathum Wan
BACC isn’t a single gallery but Bangkok’s main public art center, combining public exhibition spaces, privately run commercial galleries and shops selling crafts, prints, antiques, musical instruments, handmade jewelry, clothing and more. The foundation-run institution at Pathumwan junction opened in 2008 after a 17-year push by artists and supporters of Thai culture. Because it grew out of that collective campaign, it isn’t tied to any single name, and its mission feels more public-facing: connect local art with international audiences and international contemporary art with a broad Thai one, support creative learning and make Bangkok a more open city for art in every medium, from classic painting to comics, photography, installation and mixed media. BACC’s program also stretches beyond exhibitions into performance, film, talks and other cross-disciplinary events. The building is a landmark. Designed by Robert G. Boughey and Associates, it’s a round, fluid, multilevel structure organized around a circular central atrium with a spiraling ramp and a skylight overhead. The commercial galleries are on the 7th-9th floors, while the lower levels hold the main exhibition spaces (particularly the ground floor and basement), shops, an auditorium, studios and an art library.
