Grey’s Anatomy Exec Gives Update on Texas Spinoff Series
The highly anticipated Texas-set Grey’s Anatomy spinoff is coming to fruition — and fans might even meet the characters during season 23 of the tentpole series.
“We are currently working hard on [the spinoff]. I’m just grateful that I get to create this with Shonda, it’s a dream,” showrunner Meg Marinis told Deadline after the Thursday, October 15, season premiere. “We’re working hard, and we’re working away, and I’m learning a lot about developing and creating a show, which I didn’t know before.”
She continued, “I can’t release anything yet on timing, but I’m excited for y’all to see it.”
Before the long-running hit medical drama kicked off its landmark 23rd season, ABC ordered a spinoff series earlier this year. Few details of the show — which Marinis has conceptualized with franchise creator Shonda Rhimes — have been revealed at the time of publication, save for its West Texas location.
“It’s amazing. It’s one thing to be able to work for her but to be able to do it with her it’s really fun,” Marinis told the outlet of working with Rhimes, 56, again. “She spins everything into gold. You send something to her and then she sends it back and it’s amazing. It’s really fun, I haven’t been able to work like this with her in a while, she’s branched out and gotten so many shows, so it’s really fun. We have a great relationship.”
The currently untitled Texas series — another spinoff following the successes of the now-wrapped Private Practice and Station 19 — has not publicly debuted its cast. The new stars, however, are expected to be introduced in an upcoming episode of Grey’s.
“We’re still figuring out which episode,” Marinis teased. “Traditionally with a spinoff [that’s done]. We’re still working out on timing.”
It’s also likely that the new medical drama could enlist actors from the OG show, many of whom have a standing invitation to reprise their roles at Grey Sloan Memorial.
“We’re always open to bringing back old characters. One of the joys of having a season 23 show is that you get to do that. It’s also such a great gift to the fans,” the executive producer coyly hinted. “It always just depends on how much room we have creatively and people’s schedules because people leave the show and they go on to take other jobs, and it just gets tricky. I’m always keeping my eye on ways to introduce people to come back for a show or two.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET.
