Gloria Ray Karlmark, one of the Little Rock Nine, to release biography in 2027

In 2027, readers can expect a new way to engage with the Little Rock Nine’s historic integration of Central High School. To coincide with the 70th anniversary of their heroism, Gloria Ray Karlmark — one of the nine — is releasing a biography co-written by Swedish journalist Elisabeth Åsbrink.

According to the publisher, “Gloria Ray: The Little Rock Nine and the Fight for Civil Rights” focuses on “the story of that transformative year, and the deep roots of American racism and slavery from which it grew. Åsbrink’s eloquent narration and distinctive voice illuminate key moments of conflict and inequality by masterfully weaving together personal and national history.”

Interestingly enough, a translator — Deborah Bragan-Turner — is prominently listed among the biography’s collaborators, suggesting that the book was originally written in Swedish. Perhaps it’s not so surprising, given that Karlmark, 84, has spent the majority of her adult life living and working as a systems analyst and patent engineer in Sweden, where she moved in 1969 after marrying her Stockholm-born husband.

“Gloria Ray: The Little Rock Nine and the Fight for Civil Rights” comes out on Feb. 9. You can pre-order a copy here.
