PAK vs ENG: Shadab Khan snatches unlikely victory for Pakistan against England

Shadab Khan smashed an unbeaten 113 (96b, 13×4, 5×6) on Sunday to steer Pakistan to an unlikely win against England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The all-rounder was joined by Haris Rauf (8* off 15) in an unbroken 89-run partnership for the last wicket, which took the home team over the line in its 242-run chase after it was reeling at 154 for nine.

Shadab was given leg before off Gus Atkinson with his team on 221 but a late DRS call saved him and showed a spike on the UltraEdge.

The outcome was not on the cards after England’s pacers had cornered Pakistan batting linuep. Atkinson and Crocombe shared the new ball and nabbed three wickets inside the PowerPlay. Babar Azam’s lean run continued as he was castled by Atkinson on just 10.

Saad Baig and Salman Agha looked like steadying the ship but their association was broken on 43 runs by Jamie Overton. The pacer and left-arm orthodox Liam Dawson ran through the middle order, leaving the host at 103 for six.

Shadab realised the dwindling support and decided to launch a counter-attack, which eventually made the difference.

In the first innings, England could not have managed even 241 if not for Ben Duckett’s 105. Shaheen Afridi (4/46) grabbed two wickets up front as four of England’s top-five put up single-digit scores.

The support for Duckett finally came from Sam Curran’s 52-ball 42. Though Duckett perished against Arafat Minhas shortly after his ton, with England only at 187, Atkinson notched up 36 off just 28 balls to put up a total worth fighting for.
