Festivals
Samhain: celebrating the Celtic roots of Halloween – Normandy and Brittany
Halloween celebrations in France are not limited to costume parties and haunted theme parks. In Brittany, a region with a strong Celtic heritage, the season is also marked by events inspired by Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival associated with the end of the harvest, the beginning of winter and the thinning of the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead.
The festival is traditionally associated with the night of October 31st into November 1st. Its customs and later interpretations helped shape some of the traditions now associated with Halloween.
One of the biggest events inspired by these themes is the Festival de Samhain in Bernay, Normandy, which runs from October 29th to November 1st in 2026. The festival transforms the town and its historic abbey with concerts, fire performances, folklore-inspired spectacles, workshops and a market featuring more than 160 craftspeople and creators. Find the full programme here.
Many towns in Brittany celebrate the festival as well.
Halloween party and fireworks – Les Portes-en-Ré, Charente-Maritime
The village of Les Portes-en-Ré is marking Halloween on October 31st with afternoon activities followed by an evening concert and fireworks. The free event offers a festive way to celebrate Halloween on the Île de Ré. See the local tourist office listing.
Museum Horror Night – Lyon
The Musée Cinéma et Miniature is offering a horror-themed Halloween experience on October 31st, for visitors who enjoy spooky cinema-inspired settings. The museum’s collection of film props and special-effects creations makes it a natural fit for an evening devoted to horror. Details here.

Zombie walks and zombie-themed events in France
If you’re looking for something a little more unusual, there are several zombie parades ad night-time survival games (also involving zombies).
Zombie Walk Paris
The annual Zombie Walk returns to the streets of Paris, with participants dressed as the living dead gathering at Place de la Bastille before marching towards Place de la Nation.
Participants can arrive early to get ready and show off their zombie make-up. Although it takes place a week after Halloween, on November 7th, it’s one to keep in mind for anyone wanting to join a large-scale zombie parade – or avoid it!
Zombie Walk – Orthez, Pyrénées-Atlantiques
Orthez, located in southwestern France, is holding a Halloween afternoon for zombie fans, with a make-up stand and a zombie walk departing at 4pm on October 31st.
The programme continues with sweets, hot chocolate and horror-film screenings into the evening. Some films have age restrictions, and registration is required. Info here.
Zomb’in The Dark – Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne near Avignon
This is a zombie survival game rather than a street parade which is organised on October 31st. Teams navigate a night-time course through vineyards and parks, trying to collect checkpoints and avoid the zombies.
Participants can sign up as survivors (€32) or as zombies (€10, including professional make-up and a meal). The game lasts around 90 minutes for survivors, and the minimum age is 14 when accompanied by an adult.
Zombie Quest – Île de loisirs, Seine-et-Marne
This outdoor Halloween challenge on October 31st, right outside of Paris, combines an escape game, treasure hunt and zombie chase. Teams search for hidden cases, solve puzzles and try to escape zombie participants over a 90-minute course.
Different experiences are offered for families and adults, with the evening version designed to be more intense. Details here.
Zombie Night – Château de Hautefort, Dordogne
The grounds of the Château de Hautefort in Dordogne, southwest France, transforms itself into a zombie-infested course for a Halloween night-time adventure on October 30th and 31st.
Participants follow an orientation trail while trying to avoid the undead, then can refuel with a horror-themed street-food meal. Tickets start at €37, and places are limited.
