Birmingham City Hall opens Magic City Classic exhibit

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

Two universities, one city and generations of pride are the focus of a new photo exhibition unveiled Thursday at Birmingham City Hall.

The free exhibit, titled “A Classic Tradition: The History, Culture & Legacy of the Magic City Classic,” is located on the building’s second floor and will be on display through the end of the year.

Presented in partnership with Alabama State University, Alabama A&M University and the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the display celebrates one of the country’s most iconic HBCU football rivalries and its lasting impact on the city’s cultural identity.

“The Magic City Classic is bigger than football. It’s a tradition rooted in HBCU excellence, fierce school pride and a shared love for Birmingham that spans generations,” Mayor Randall Woodfin said. “This exhibition honors the people, the moments and the memories that have made the Classic a cornerstone of our city’s culture and a tradition worth celebrating for generations to come.”

Visitors can view archival photographs and historical imagery dating from the 1950s to the present. The collection highlights unforgettable moments from the annual event, including the football game, marching band performances, tailgating and the famous fifth quarter.

Ultimately, the exhibit aims to preserve the stories that make the Magic City Classic more than just a game, showcasing a deep-rooted celebration of HBCU excellence, community and school pride that unites generations of students, alumni and fans.
