Young Sheldon Stars Recall Weird Adult, Child Wedding Scene
The cast of Young Sheldon was brutally honest about a story line that didn’t sit right with them involving an adult and a child getting married on screen.
Jessica Radloff‘s tell-all book Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy, which is out now, revisited a wedding sequence in the later seasons where Missy (Raegan Revord) had a dream she was marrying Pastor Rob (Dan Byrd).
“It was tremendously awkward, but as the adult in the dynamic, I have to be the one to not make it awkward,” Byrd recalled. “Raegan’s obviously wise and mature beyond her years, but she’s a child, or at least was at that stage in her life, so you just try to make a joke out of the whole thing and keep it as lighthearted as possible.”
He continued: “Matt [Hobby] was there too, which helped, and it’s a very friendly set, but yeah, the optics of it aren’t great if you don’t understand the full context.”
Raegan’s mother, Holly Revord, meanwhile, wasn’t thrilled by the scene.
“I didn’t like seeing Raegan in a wedding dress at that young age! It made me uncomfortable,” she admitted. “I knew it was awkward for Raegan so I tried to stay positive in front of them. The majority of Raegan’s school years was spent in set school with one teacher, Ms. Sandy Santacreu, so Raegan couldn’t even relate to those feelings of teenage girls having crushes on their teachers.”
Holly recalled Raegan, 18, referring to it as “weird and gross.”
The Big Bang Theory, which aired from 2007 to 2019, starred Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch as a group of friends made up of scientists and their significant others.
During its run, the CBS comedy won 10 Emmy Awards and spawned the prequel series, Young Sheldon. The follow-up introduced Us to Sheldon’s (Iain Armitage) brother Georgie (Montana Jordan), whose love story with Mandy (Emily Osment) set the scene for CBS’ Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage.
In the tell-all book, the cocreators explained how they ultimately made the decision to wrap up Young Sheldon — and revealed tension emerged due to an “informal and impersonal” Zoom call about the cancellation. Annie Potts, meanwhile, felt there was more story to tell even if Iain’s Sheldon wasn’t the focus.
Potts said she felt “devalued” after not being offered a series regular role in the spinoff. She later aired out her frustrations in an interview, blaming CBS for a decision made by the show’s writers, which she claimed she got a call about.
“We were told they were hoping some of the Sheldon family would pop by once in a while, but that is not a real or generous invitation, you know what I mean? Like, ‘Oh gosh, that sounds really great,’” she said before recalling her debut on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. “I feel a little bit like I’m a guest in my own house, and there’s no real place for me. I love to work, but it’s a very odd sensation.”
Iain, 18, for his part, has yet to return in any capacity to the fictional franchise. The book confirmed that Iain declined the offer to appear in a Thanksgiving episode in the first season of Georgie & Mandy.
“I was just disappointed. We wanted this story to go forward for this family, and obviously Sheldon is a critical part of this family,” cocreator Chuck Lorre added. “The Thanksgiving episode that would have included him would have been wonderful to do, but their reasoning is understandable.”
