Storm and flood warnings for south of France

Five départements on southern France have been placed on alert for violent storms, and possible localised flooding, starting on Monday afternoon.

The départements of Hérault, Gard, Var, Lozère and Bouches-du-Rhône – which includes the city of Marseille – have been placed on an orange level weather warning due to forecast violent storms.

The orange warning, the second highest alert level, is due to fierce storms blowing in from the Mediterranean.

Strong winds and extremely heavy rains are forecast – Météo France says that Gard and Hérault can expect up to 150mm of rain in three hours, while Lozère might see up to 200mm of rain.

Localised flooding is expected in some areas.

The rains are expected to continue into Tuesday evening, with yellow-level warnings extended to Drôme, Loire, Haute-Loire, Saône-et-Loire and Rhône (which includes the city of Lyon) on Tuesday.
