Spain bids to host 2035 Rugby World Cup
Spain on Thursday officially submitted its bid to host the 2035 Men’s Rugby World Cup, positioning itself as a major front-runner to stage the event.
The Spanish Rugby Federation (RFER) submitted its detailed questionnaire to World Rugby, aiming to deliver the “best World Cup in history”.
Spain’s bid leverages the massive infrastructure, transport systems, and stadium upgrades already being put in place for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Spain is co-hosting alongside Portugal and Morocco.
Some of the football stadiums used to host the rugby matches would include Barcelona’s revamped Spotify Camp Nou, Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, Atlético Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano, and Bilbao’s San Mamés.
If Spain’s bid succeeds, the final is planned for the 105,000-capacity Nou Camp. This would make it the first Rugby World Cup showpiece in history to be played in front of more than 100,000 fans.
Although Spain is by no means a great by global rugby standards, its national team Los Leones (The Lions) have qualified for the past two Rugby World Cups, only to be disqualified for fielding ineligible players during the qualification stages
