NCIS’ McGee Makes Tony His ‘Probie’ on Director’s 1st Day
Timothy McGee has a little fun with “probie” Tony DiNozzo on the upcoming episode of NCIS as Tony begins his first day as deputy director — and OG fans are going to love it.
“OK, tell me, who’s your probie?” Tony (Michael Weatherly) whispers to McGee (Sean Murray) in Us’ exclusive sneak peek at the Tuesday, October 13, episode of NCIS.
McGee claims, “I don’t have one,” which throws Tony off, as he famously called McGee “probie” when he was a probationary agent and new to the team a decade ago.

“OK, I’m going to take my director hat off. So who’s your guy or gal?” Tony asks again, referring to his new role as the deputy director of NCIS, which he was given during the season 24 premiere.
McGee explains, “Tony, I’m serious. They never assigned me a probie.”
Tony points out, “They don’t assign anyone a probie, you gotta take one. Someone to mentor,” to which McGee replies, “To torture.”
“Exactly. Everyone benefits,” Tony says with a smirk on his face.
Tony then puts his “director hat back on” and tells McGee, “I am ordering you, get a probie.”
McGee hesitates briefly before responding, “Ooh, OK, you know what? I think I may have someone.”
He reveals, “I served as acting director several times already. This is pretty much your first day on the job,” hinting that Tony could be his probie.
“Danger, Will Robinson, I can have you court marshalled,” Tony says with a laugh.

“Whatever you say, probie,” McGee replies with a big grin.
Elsewhere in the preview, Tony shows off his playful side and pokes fun at McGee in a way that is reminiscent of the good ole days when they worked together. (Weatherly, 58, exited the series in 2016 after 13 seasons, while Murray, 48, has been on the show since day one.)
“I hope you’re not here to ask for your old apartment back, because Delilah just redecorated,” McGee tells Tony as the pair grab a coffee at NCIS headquarters.
Tony doesn’t skip a beat, joking that McGee’s wife was one of his first calls when he got back to town. “Oh, no, I’ve already spoken to Delilah. She’s OK with it,” he quips.
“What do you mean?” McGee replies, visibly worried his old partner might be moving in with his family. “Kidding. I found another place,” Tony explains.
As the pair — who worked together for over a decade before Tony left to start his own private security agency overseas — were catching up in the courtyard, another person walks up and says, “Afternoon, director,” looking at Tony.
“Director DiNozzo. Still doesn’t sound real,” McGee admits. Tony jokes, “I’m hoping repetition helps.”
“Not that I don’t think you can do the job, you know. It’s just, I keep picturing the guy who drove a Corvette with his feet,” McGee says, backpeddling.
Tony reminds his longtime friend, “I was being shot at. And believe it or not, this is harder.”
Tony admits the job is not for the faint of heart, adding, “I spent the last week learning what keeps the U.S. Navy up at night. And this job requires both hands and both feet.”
NCIS airs on CBS Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
