Anyone who has tried to book a fingerprint appointment in Spain knows how frustrating the process can be. Even after receiving approval for a residency application, foreign nationals may still face another hurdle: securing an appointment to obtain their TIE card. Now, a new system introduced by the Policía Nacional could make that final step easier for some applicants.

On October 9, 2026, six more Spanish provinces joined a pilot scheme that automatically assigns fingerprint appointments to selected applicants, removing the need for them to search for a slot themselves.

Alicante, Málaga, Murcia, Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona are among the provinces which have been included in this new system. The system covers just 10 per cent of the relevant applications, so most will have to continue with the old system.

How Spain’s new automatic TIE appointment system works

In the past, however, receiving a residence permit has not been the end of the paperwork. Foreign residents who need a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE), foreign identity card, have to make an appointment with the Policía Nacional to present their fingerprints.

This means for many applicants that they must constantly check the online calendar for the availability of a convenient appointment, often for days or even weeks.

The new pilot program is to eliminate this extra step for some applicants. According to an official announcement from Spain’s Directorate-General of Police, selected applicants will automatically be assigned a fingerprint appointment following a favourable residency decision.

So that the requesting party does not have to waste time finding a vacant time slot, they are notified in advance of the day, hour and police station where the appointment is to take place.

The pilot program initially applies to approximately 10 per cent of all applications decided after October 8, 2026, which means that an approved residency application is not a sure ticket to an appointment under the new system.

The change is a consequence of long-standing difficulties in the system of appointment to the Spanish foreigners’ offices, especially in areas with a high foreign population.

For British residents and other non-EU nationals who need a TIE card, the new system could simplify one of the final administrative steps in obtaining their documentation.

Which Spanish provinces are included and how will applicants be notified?

On the 9th of October, the new phase of the work began, with the entry of six provinces into the work: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga and Murcia.

This system had already been tried out in other places in Spain, such as Girona, Tarragona and Lleida.

This enlargement is particularly important for the foreign residents of the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, where the acquisition of the appropriate residence documents is a familiar administrative requirement. The applicants who are selected will receive an appointment notice by text message, e-mail, or both.

The notification must state where and when the applicant must report to the fingerprint appointment. Instructions from the Málaga Immigration Office state that the allocation procedure takes into account the applicant’s place of residence, the date of the favourable decision and the appointment possibilities, with the aim of allocating the application to the appropriate police station.

Consequently, it is recommended that applicants check the validity of their contact data and regularly check their mailbox after receiving a positive decision for the correctness of the notification.

Please note that, if you have appointed a lawyer or other representative, you will also be notified using the contact details you gave your representative.

However, not every residency authorisation is covered.

Some of the authorisations that are issued are only valid once additional conditions have been met, such as entering Spain or registering with Social Security. The requests subject to such conditions are not included in the procedure of automatic granting of appointments as it is regulated in this document.

What if you do not receive an automatic fingerprint appointment?

Obtaining a TIE card remains an important step for foreign residents in Spain, and despite the introduction of the new system, the existing appointment booking process is not being abolished.

Applicants who have not been automatically granted an appointment approximately 20 days after they have received their decision on their right of residence must request one through the usual procedure.

The new system does not remove the need for the applicant to follow up the progress of the application, or to make an appointment if necessary.

Rules also govern those who receive automatic appointment but cannot come.

The appointment made can be cancelled on the same platform. The reference number for the appointment is given in the appointment confirmation.

If a cancellation is properly entered, it can be included in the automatic appointment allocation again and can receive an appointment when it is vacant. If, however, you just do not come, without giving notice, you will have to make a new appointment.

The project is still being tested, and will be evaluated by the government before any expansion.

As of yet, however, this new change is no more than a temporary relief from the vexing appointment problems which Spain’s fingerprint appointment system has long presented.

Nevertheless, for those who were lucky enough to be selected, it means one less administrative chore between obtaining residence and finally receiving the TIE card.
