A runner battling blisters, missing toenails and the emotional strain of months on the road is continuing an extraordinary 4,500-kilometre journey across Europe to help some of the dogs most in need of a home.
Lee Harker is taking on the Running 4 Paws challenge, running from Denmark to southern Spain over approximately 126 days to raise awareness and funds for PAWS Xaló, a dog rescue organisation in the Marina Alta.
His ultimate goal is to help create a dedicated home for older rescue dogs and those who can find it harder to secure permanent families.
44 kilometres through France
Lee recently reached Day 55 of the challenge, completing another huge distance as he ran 44.20 kilometres through France, travelling from Mâcon towards Villefranche-sur-Saône.
The latest stage was another demanding day in a journey that has already pushed him physically and emotionally.
Running thousands of kilometres means Lee has had to contend with the inevitable injuries and discomfort that come with spending day after day on the road.
He has developed painful blisters and has already lost three toenails during the challenge.
Yet the physical pain is only part of the sacrifice.
Lee has also spent a prolonged period away from his partner Fay and their dogs while travelling across Europe on foot.
The couple are funding the challenge themselves, adding another personal commitment to an already extraordinary undertaking.
A run for dogs without a home
At the heart of Running 4 Paws is the work of PAWS Xaló and the dogs the rescue organisation is trying to help.
While puppies and younger dogs can often attract considerable interest from potential adopters, older animals and dogs with additional challenges can face a much longer wait for a permanent home.
The campaign aims to help provide a safe and secure place specifically for these dogs, giving animals that might otherwise be overlooked somewhere to live and receive care.
Rather than simply being a test of endurance, every kilometre Lee runs is intended to shine a light on the animals waiting for their chance.
His journey is taking him across multiple countries before he eventually reaches southern Spain, with hundreds of kilometres still to cover.
From Denmark to Spain on foot
A 4,500-kilometre run is a huge undertaking under any circumstances, with Lee facing a relentless routine of running, recovering and getting back on the road.
The challenge is expected to take approximately 126 days in total, making it a months-long commitment rather than a single endurance event.
For Lee and Fay, however, the purpose behind the distance remains clear: helping rescue dogs who have already faced difficult starts in life.
The Running 4 Paws team is now sharing updates from the route and encouraging people to follow Lee’s progress and support the campaign.
As Lee continues south, each day’s distance brings him closer to Spain and closer to the rescue dogs at the heart of his remarkable journey.
