Berlin Airport briefly suspends flights over drone sighting
Berlin’s airport briefly suspended flights on Wednesday evening after a drone sighting, Germany’s DPA news agency cited airport and police officials as saying.
A drone was spotted on the Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s northern runway at 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT). Airspace above the airport was closed minutes later and operations were suspended for at least 45 minutes.
Several flights were diverted to Dresden.
As of 9:05 p.m., airspace was reopened but flights were experiencing delays.
Drone sightings on the rise
Drone sightings have become a common occurrence for airports in Europe, with Berlin’s airport recording the highest number of sightings in Germany in the first part of the year.
Some 28 drone sightings were recorded during the first six months, as per figures by the German air traffic control (DFS). In seven of those cases, flight operations at the airport were temporarily suspended.
This is a jump from last year, when eight drones were detected at the airport and its surroundings in the whole of 2025, according to DFS.
