How much you can expect to pay for petrol or diesel in France right now
The average price for a litre of diesel hit a record high in France on Friday – so how much can drivers now expect to pay?
On September 18th the average price of a litre of diesel in France set a new record at €2.39 – one cent higher than thz previous record which was set in the spring.
This average was calculated from prices displayed at more than 9,000 service stations on the Ministry of the Economy’s prix-carburants.gouv.fr website.
Meanwhile, the price of SP95-E10, the best-selling petrol/gasoline in France, has been above its 2022 peak (€2.11) for more than 10 days, reaching €2.17 a litre.
The premium unleaded SP98 (E5) increased by six cents in a week to reach an average of €2.27.
At the pump, motorists are spending an average of €108 for a 50-litre fill-up today – the tank size of an average family car. That’s €2 more than a week ago and €7.50 more than a month ago. At the current rate, a full tank could cost €110 very soon.
But those are just average prices.
Thousands of filling stations are selling diesel at €2.40/litre; while on Friday some 700 service stations were displaying prices for diesel at €2.50/litre – and 70 were charging prices higher than €2.70.
One filling station in Paris was photographed with prices of €2.67 a litre for petrol and €2.80 a litre for diesel.
A motorway station east of Montbéliard (Doubs) was advertising diesel at €2.82/litre, while one in in Parcé-sur-Sarthe, and one near Chartres (Eure-et-Loir) on the A11 motorway were selling it for one cent less at €2.81.
More than 100 service stations across the country were selling SP95-E10 at prices of €2.40/litre or more, according to the website, while motorists in Nievre have had to pay the highest average for a litre at a shade over €2.18.
These were only updated prices available on the government website. Other stations may be showing higher prices still.
As a general rule, service stations on the autoroutes are the most expensive while supermarkets offer good deals, and Total filling stations have also been running offers with fuel under €2 a litre.
