Paul Finebaum questions congressional role in college football, criticizes Lane Kiffin at Birmingham Bowl luncheon
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Paul Finebaum questioned congressional involvement in college football and criticized LSU coach Lane Kiffin during the JLAB Birmingham Bowl’s 20th anniversary luncheon Thursday at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel.
Finebaum, the guest speaker at the luncheon, discussed the Protect College Sports Act, which cleared a key Senate hurdle this week.
The bill would create national rules for NIL, player compensation, transfers and other parts of college athletics. Finebaum said congressional involvement could make the sport more complicated.
“I’m concerned, as someone who is apolitical, mostly, that Congress putting its grubby hands on college football will make it worse as opposed to better,” Finebaum said.
Finebaum also weighed in on Kiffin and the decision to list LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt as doubtful ahead of this weekend’s Top 10 showdown with Ole Miss.
“Kiffin continues to spit in the face of the commissioner by listing his quarterback as doubtful. Listen, I’m not the team surgeon. But he was okay until yesterday,” Finebaum said.

“You have to seriously question everything he says because he has lied so many times in his career,” he added.
The luncheon also featured the unveiling of a new Birmingham Bowl anniversary logo as organizers looked ahead to this year’s game.
“To get number 20 behind this is going to be great. We’ve got a lot to celebrate planned between now and the game. And so we’re really looking forward to it to to kicking this game off in 103 days,” an organizer said.
The 20th JLAB Birmingham Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. at Protective Stadium.
