SOLON, Iowa —
A fifth-grade teacher and a 10-year-old student died during a class field trip to an Iowa recreation area, according to officials.
It happened at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area during a School of the Wild field trip with their fifth-grade class on Tuesday, KCRG reported.
Authorities identified 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen and 10-year-old Ahmed Osman as the victims. They were recovered from the Coralville Reservoir spillway at the nature reserve on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
“Our hearts are shattered by the loss of two beloved members of our Borlaug Elementary family, fifth-grade teacher Hannah Jorgensen and fifth-grade student Ahmed Osman,” Iowa City Community School District wrote in a social media post on Thursday. “There are simply no words that can adequately express the depth of this loss. Hannah and Ahmed were so much more than members of our school community. They were a teacher and student, a colleague and classmate, a friend, and most importantly, deeply loved members of their families.”
The incident and the circumstances surrounding what happened remain under investigation, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday.
The University of Iowa runs School of the Wild and Wildlife Camps programming at the nature preserve for K-12 students.
