Should elderly drivers in France get an ‘S’ sticker for their car?

Every now and then, rumours start circulating in France, online and on social media, claiming that the government is about to make an “S” sticker (for ‘senior’) mandatory for drivers over 70 – and in recent weeks, that rumour has resurfaced.

So is it true?

In short, no.

Using an ‘S’ sticker is entirely optional and there are no current plans to make it compulsory – something France’s Sécurité Routière has explicitly stated on its own site under the article: “Drivers over the age of 70 will have to display an “S” sticker (for “Senior”) on the back of their car. Fact or fiction?”

The source of the rumours

The issue seems to resurface whenever there’s broader EU-level talk about age-related licence restrictions for older drivers, or a story in the news about an older driver being involved in an accident.

And that’s precisely what seems to have ignited the most recent rumours.

In October 2025 the EU adopted a directive ending lifetime driving licences and letting member states require more frequent renewal – even medical checks – for drivers over 65. 

That directive came at the same time as a string of high-profile accidents involving elderly drivers in France, and since August 2026, French MPs have been arguing over how strict to make the new rules. 

So where has the S sticker come from?

The sticker itself, which features a red ‘S’ on a white background, is real but non-official.

It was created about a decade ago by a small association called Signal Seniors and is sold for around €4 – €6 online and in shops.

There’s also a rival green “AG” version from a company called Job & Co. 

Neither has any state, EU, or Sécurité Routière backing. 

The ‘S’ sticker is modelled on the ‘A’ (for apprenti – apprentice/learner) sticker, which was introduced in 2004 and is legally mandatory as part of the permis probatoire (probationary licence) system for newly qualified drivers – which has probably helped to fuel the rumours that the ‘S’ sticker is mandatory, too.

According to Signal Seniors president, Gilles Renard, the ‘S’ sticker aims to protect elderly people from other drivers.

On the association’s website, he explains the inspiration for the sticker:

“It was by observing all these elderly people who, despite their advanced age, are forced to use their cars to do their shopping, visit family, go to the doctor, or simply buy a loaf of bread.

An elderly couple next door told me one day, “People can’t see us in all this traffic, and they drive recklessly… We don’t feel safe. Young drivers are easily spotted on the road with the ‘A’ sticker, and we pay attention to them… Why can’t we be careful?! “

The association is also clear about its stance on the status of the stickers, saying, “far from wanting to make this disc mandatory for all our seniors, we believe it should only be used by elderly people who have slightly lost confidence behind the wheel and who want to feel more reassured by being visible to other drivers.”

What the statistics say

According to the ONISR (Observatoire National Interministériel de la Sécurité Routière), the government body that compiles France’s official road-death statistics, older drivers experience less frequent but more serious accidents due to increased physical vulnerability. 

When a senior is in a crash, they’re far more likely to die from it than a younger person would be from the same collision, because an older body absorbs impact much worse – which is why they represent 25 percent of road fatalities, compared to 19 percent of the total population. 

So if you see an ‘S’ or an ‘AG’ sticker, it’s worth paying attention to, even if neither has anything to do with the law.
