Spain on flood alert as Storm Adam worsens

Swathes of Spain are under weather alert for heavy rain and flooding on Monday morning, with the Mediterranean coast particularly impacted.

State weather agency Aemet issued the highest red alert in the eastern region of Valencia and the holiday island of Mallorca for “extraordinary danger” of torrential rain in the early hours of Monday.

The Balearic Islands regional government suspended classes in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera, while in Valencia, scarred by Spain’s deadliest floods in a generation in 2024, some commuter trains were suspended until further notice.

Valencia’s regional government announced that it has activated emergency level 2 and has convened a meeting of the Operational Coordination Centre (CECOPI). Units from Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) have joined forces with the emergency services in response to reports of flooding in the town of Oliva.

In the southern region of Andalusia, provinces stretching from Granada to Seville are on yellow-level alert.

Sánchez declares love for corruption-accused wife on campaign trail

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez kicked off his rally this Saturday in Fuenlabrada and did so with a clear message of love.

The Socialist leader wanted to show public support for his wife in the midst of the pre-campaign period, as she is due to stand trial for influence-peddling and misappropriation of public funds.

“Begoña is here with me today,” he said, to applause from the audience. “I wanted to thank you,” he added, visibly moved. “Thank you for being my wife, for being the mother of my daughters and for being my partner,” he added as she came up onto the stage to kiss him and burst into tears.

In April 2024, Sánchez took a five day period of reflection to consider his position after accusations against his wife emerged.

Rate of new families outpaces building in Spain

Over the past year in Spain, 157,476 fewer properties have been built than the number of new households created in the country.

The lack of supply is particularly evident in major cities and their surrounding areas, although in virtually every province, construction is failing to keep pace with population growth.

According to data from the Ministry of Housing, 40,136 private-sector homes were completed in the first six months of this year.

But amid a housing crisis at the centre of Spain’s general election campaign, that number is practically the same as were completed in the same period of 2025 — a year-on-year increase of just 0.8 percent.

Ministry data shows that the number of homes completed each half-year has hovered around 40,000 since 2021. The Bank of Spain estimates the Spanish market has a shortfall of at least 750,000 units.

Madrid to monitor drivers with over 1,000 number-plate-reading cameras

The 142 municipalities in the Madrid region with fewer than 20,000 residents will soon be able to install cameras on their main streets.

The installation will be promoted and funded by the regional government and aims to improve public safety in these towns, both in terms of crime prevention and traffic management.

The 1,123 cameras are slated to be installed at 564 locations and will be fitted with number-plate recognition systems to gather data on vehicles travelling through the region’s smaller towns.

“The intention is for this infrastructure to serve both to improve traffic management and to strengthen the operational capacity of local police forces,” government sources say in the Spanish media.
