BJ Wyrick just dropped the weirdest campaign ad you’ve ever seen
Tuesday night on Facebook — because of course it was on Facebook — City Director and mayoral candidate BJ Wyrick released an ad so batshit insane it defies description.
At first glance, you might assume this was some kind of Halloween-themed thing. Oh, sweet summer child, you couldn’t be more wrong.
No, this trypophobia-inducing bit of nightmare fuel appears to be some kind of anti-Flock stance, as an unidentified male voice flatly “sings”:
Who’s watching?
You need to know that Little Rock is watching you
In everything you do
4,000 cameras always lookin’ at you
And me
You need to know that Little Rock is watching you
In everything you do
Lookin’ at your car, your house, your street and your family, too
These banger lyrics, turned way up in the mix to really drive home both the artistic vision and the amateurish vibe of the whole thing, are layered over a tinny sample of Rockwell’s 1983 hit “Somebody’s Watching Me.” Where Rockwell had Michael Jackson on backing vocals, however, Wyrick has someone who sounds like an AI-generated Steve Landers doing bad karaoke.
As strong as the writing and arrangement are, the best part of this whole fever dream might just be the complete lack of a call to action. The ad never mentions Flock by name, doesn’t tell people what they can or should do to push back against Flock’s ongoing invasion of privacy and lacks any tie between “Flock cameras exist” and a reason to vote for Wyrick. It doesn’t even say that Wyrick opposes the cameras! For all we know from this commercial, she might think they’re so great that she felt moved to write a song about them!
Despite being on the city board since Boyz II Men’s “On Bended Knee” topped the charts, Wyrick faces an uphill battle in her quest to unseat incumbent Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr., who is seeking a third team at the helm of the capital city. A halfbaked ad featuring 40 seconds of delirium over a 43-year-old hook seems unlikely to help her pull off the upset.
