Patti Harrison Had Dreams of a Tech Utopia. Silicon Valley Smashed Them
If we’re moving video games from being a physical purchase to an online purchase completely, where you don’t have any physical disk, any packaging, anything. That’s so much waste that you’ve just prevented, because there’s such a huge issue with whether things actually get recycled effectively.
But we’re learning that companies are like, “No, you actually don’t own that. You don’t actually own that the day we decide we don’t wanna keep it on our marketplace anymore.” So I understand why people are like, “I want physical stuff. I wanna own the thing I spent my money on.” And I think that is a direct response to the way that our capitalist economy has completely punished everyone who’s drank the Kool-Aid or hasn’t, ’cause you are participating in it even if you disagree with it, unless you’re Luigi Mangione or something.
I would love a world in which we’re all boho and we’re drawing on the wall. We’re drawing, like, Minions having sex on a wall with chalk in a cave somewhere.
That is the dream: Minions having sex on a wall in a cave. You nailed it. I’m curious about your comedy in all of this. Have you felt like you’ve needed to change your approach to comedy because people have such a hard time telling what’s true and what’s not true? Does that stress you out in the context of the way you approach your comedy?
I posted the other day, from our shoot, I had a MAGA hat …
I was so excited when I saw it.
It’s like a thirst trap. It’s me in my bra, my tits are out, and I have this hat on. I was joking in the caption. I was saying I’m finally glad to be coming out and getting away from a community that is so judgmental, meaning, like, queer people and liberals. I was coming out as MAGA as a joke, and I thought that was very clear.
Pre-algorithms I felt like my social media was my page, where people who were following me were there because they sought me out and they understood it, and they liked my work. I could post stuff within the context of them understanding my point of view about it and knowing it’s a joke. With algorithms taking over, you get so much more random harassment because your posts are completely taken out of context and thrown into other people’s feeds. It’s designed to agitate them. The algorithms know this person is not gonna like this, and they’re very likely to post about it.
