The IISc professor whose AI talk went viral
Study maths, learn to think, learn programming or get a job. For a generation of Indian STEM students, that was the script. Now AI may be tearing up that playbook – so how do we adapt to this new world order?.
In this conversation, Indulekha Aravind speaks with Dr Prathosh AP, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering at IISc Bengaluru, whose classroom talk on pedagogy in the age of AI went viral. If our only goal is to improve efficiency and productivity, why work with humans, with our quirks and limitations – why not use AI, rather than people, he asks. What is our “moat”, as humans? What will become of work, as we know it, and the process of learning? Would there be any point in having colleges, classrooms and lectures? And are we having enough conversations about this “civilisational shift” that’s under way?
Three of Prathosh’s students, who were in his class the day of his viral lecture and whose questions, in fact, provoked that talk, join him in the studio to explain their anxieties and hopes in this changing world.
Prathosh also explains why his inbox flooded, and why he couldn’t sleep.
