‘The Age of Anxiety’ opens Friday at AMFA

‘THE AGE OF ANXIETY: GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM IN ART AND FILM’
FRIDAY 10/9-SUNDAY 1/10/27. Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Free.

There’s nothing quite like the drama, darkness and distortions of German Expressionism to ring in the Halloween season. In “The Age of Anxiety: German Expressionism in Art and Film,” the latest major exhibition to come to the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, dozens of mostly German artists working in the tumultuous wake of World War I — from Bernhard Kretzschmar to Max Beckmann to Käthe Kollwitz to George Grosz and beyond — will be brought together alongside imagery from aesthetically concordant silent films such as Robert Wiene’s “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920), F.W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” (1922) and Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” (1927), all of which will be screened for free with historical introductions provided by AMFA staff throughout the exhibition’s run.
