While 2026 has had record-low homicide numbers, the same decline has not been observed in mass shootings.

As of Sept. 24, there have been 343 mass shootings across the U.S. in which four or more victims were injured or killed, excluding the shooter(s).

At the same time last year, there had been 319 mass shootings. That’s according to a Get The Facts Data Team analysis of Gun Violence Archive data provided by the Gun Violence Data Hub.

This year is on track to be the sixth worst year for mass shootings since 2014.

While there have been about 8% more shootings in 2026 compared to 2025, the nation still has not seen the high mass casualty numbers that plagued the early post-COVID-19 pandemic years.

Where the shootings took place

More than 320 people have been killed, and more than 1,440 people have been injured, in the mass shootings so far this year.

The shootings have spanned 40 states and Washington, D.C.

Texas has the highest number of mass shootings so far this year — 37. California, Illinois and Louisiana follow with 20 each.

The two deadliest mass shootings this year were both domestic violence incidents.

In Shreveport, Louisiana, eight children were killed and two adults were injured in a mass shooting in April. The suspect fathered seven of the children killed.

In Billings, Montana, a man killed eight of his relatives, including four children, in August.

Thursday marks the nine-year anniversary of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. On Oct. 1, 2017, a shooter opened fire on an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas, killing 60 people and injuring more than 430 others.
