Two 14-Year-Old Boys Arrested Over ‘Nagoya Ride’
NAGOYA –
Two 14-year-old junior high school students have been arrested on suspicion of obstructing police duties by riding bicycles dangerously in front of a patrol car in Nagoya, part of a practice known on social media as the “Nagoya Ride.”
According to police, the boys, from Seto and Kasugai in Aichi Prefecture, allegedly rode slowly in a zigzag pattern in front of a patrol car on a road in Nagoya’s Minato Ward in July.
They are also suspected of cutting in front of the patrol car and deliberately stopping their bicycles, obstructing the officers as they carried out their duties.
Police have not disclosed whether the two boys have admitted to the allegations.
Groups of young cyclists have attracted attention online for occupying much of the roadway while repeatedly performing wheelies, riding against traffic and engaging in other dangerous behavior.
The activity has become known on social media as the “Nagoya Ride,” and police have stepped up enforcement in September, with a series of young people being detained or charged in connection with such riding.
